Xiahe is a small town located in Gansu Province in western- central China. It lies an approximate eight hour bus ride away from Lanzhou, the provincial capital. Before it was annexed by China it was part of Tibet. It is still culturally very similar to Tibet. The highlight is the Large Labrang Monastery which still attracts thousands of Tibetan pilgrims. It is one of the best places to visit for travellers who can't make it all the way up to Lhasa.
